We have postponed pictures until Spring

We have postponed pictures until Spring.  Due to several conflicts, not the least of which timing, we would not have pictures back before Christmas.  So Oasis Academy pictures will be done in the spring.   We will post all of the details including the specific day and date, costs, and schedules for taking the pictures on or before our next parent meeting.   That meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6pm in the lunchroom.    Through no one's fault and in an effort to accommodate as many schedules as possible we think this would be the best solution.   Please know that  we are very happy to be working with Lissa Overlie and Susan Robertson to get quality pictures for your students.  Thank you for your understanding.  If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me directly and I will do my best to answer.

SORRY for the CONFUSION!

The Mount Rose Ski Program is NOW, I repeat NOW, accepting applications. Please refer to the prior post on how to register your child.

Let's have some fun in the snow!

Attention

FOA is not going to have a parent meeting the month of December, so the next meeting will be in January after we get back to school.

Happy Holidays!

Pizza coupons are here!

No more sending in loose change and three $1.00 bills on Thursday.

In an effort to save time for our teachers who have been collecting the money each Thursday and the volunteers who have spent numerous hours counting and recounting... we are asking families to purchase coupon books for pizza. They are available at school - just stop by and see Mrs. Evans or send in a check (made out to FOA) with your child if you feel he/she can get the coupons home without losing them. The books are $15.00 for 5 coupons.

Then, on Thursday you can send in just one coupon, the kids will turn them in first thing in the morning to their teachers. It is important that we get these in at the start of school, to avoid running out of pizza as we call in our tally before 8:30 in the morning.

If you absolutely cannot get the coupons this month we will still be accepting cash through Dec. 15th, but I encourage everyone to switch over to the coupons as soon as possible. Thanks for your cooperation.

Whichever class has the most items will win 'the BIGGEST GIVER' award and will have their picture taken and posted in our school with the honorary title.

Enrichment - SKI PROGRAM

We are excited to announce that Oasis Academy has signed up with Mt. Rose for their Local Youth Program. Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe is offering ski and snowboard development programs for elementary age children, in a controlled learning environment. Students learn from the same instructor throughout the lesson block. We are schedule for Fridays at 10:00 AM. Details about how ...to register will be available in November. Here are some of the details we know right now (these are right from the Mt. Rose website and may be subject to change):

Session 1 (Rosebuds, Rippers)-
Starts the week of Jan. 9th and ends the week of Feb. 13th.

**Rosebuds
(ages 4-10)
$200 (includes rental equipment* and lift ticket, snowboarding open to ages 7-10)
Rosebuds AM – 10:00 to 12:00

Rippers
(ages 10-12)
$115 ($165 with rental equipment*)
Rippers AM – 10:00 to 11:30

The cost also includes a lift ticket for each day of lessons.

The school will NOT be providing transportation but their may be opportunities to carpool.
This would make a GREAT Christmas gift (just saying you can't start planning to soon).
Last but not least. Mt. Rose will only be offering their season passes for a couple of more weeks. If this is something you are interested in you may want to order yourself a season pass. No reason you can't ski/snowboard while the kiddos are in lessons and then you can always ski/snowboard together the rest of the day.

LOGOWEAR - This just in!

Please look at it carefully, there are only 2 items that are uniform approved. Your child can turn their order form into their classroom teacher. You will need to print and fill out the last page to turn in with your check made out to FOA.

... We will have another order in the future, but this time, we have a quick turn around because of the French Toast sweaters being on back order.

MONEY is DUE NOV. 7th.

What a fun way to show your school spirit!

Boxtops for Education

Enter the contests, it is really easy

Log on to http://www.BTFE.com/, do a simple registration, and you can enter these contests frequently, you can get coupons for boxtops products, earn E-Boxtops and bonus E-Boxtops automatically when you shop online at a number of common websites (plus get special deals like free shipping), and take surveys or watch videos to get bonus boxtops, which change every month. You can watch 5 Ford videos (ads), let them run in the background (less than 2 minutes each), and get 25 boxtops electronically credited to Oasis Academy's account. Let's say 50 families and 10 staff ran these videos in the background for 10 minutes while they are doing something else this week, our school would almost effortlessly earn $150.00 by Friday. That was just one way to get the bonus boxtops. Looks like there are a number of easy ways to get money here. Those dimes really do add up

UPDATE - Enrichment - Guitar Lessons

The class has now been opened to 4th through 8th grade children.

Younger students may need a smaller guitar (3/4 size) for their smaller hands and the teacher can provide it, if needed. Also, Premier pawn is ordering some guitar tuners to keep in stock for students, and Carpenter's Music will discount guitars and accessories for any students. The teacher can bring anything from Reno to Fallon if the students are unable to make the trip.

We will be exploring sun-reactive dyes and discharge techniques using stamps and stencils. All parts of the projects will be discussed and demonstrated, and you will be provided with an information packet to help you replicate what you have practiced in class. The science behind the "dye magic" will also be revealed. This is a fun and energetic class that would be perfect for parents and children to enjoy together!

Have a couple of T-shirts that are in serious need of a little bit of awesome? Parents out there, do you have a stash of baby’s onesies that are just a little past their prime? This is the lab for you! We will be exploring dip dyes, dye discharge, and printing techniques that will get that old shirt out of your closet and back into daily rotation. This fun and energetic class is great for parents and children to enjoy together. As with the last class, you will be provided with an information packet to help you replicate what you practiced in the class.

**Please see new "Volunteer Policies" tab at the top for the same information.**

The Buzz Around Oasis Academy Is All About Our Volunteers!

Thank you all for the generous help and support over the summer. We are off to a great start and already well on our way to reaching this years goal of logging at least 7,000 volunteer hours. In an effort to streamline the volunteer process and make the time you spend working towards the goal as valuable as possible we are implementing a 3 tier volunteer system.

1. Classroom Volunteers

2. School wide Volunteers

3. Special Projects and Staff Request

1. Classroom Volunteers

We have found that the teachers know what they need and when they need it. Classroom volunteers will work directly with the teachers. Friends of Oasis (FOA) will no longer be directly responsible for scheduling or managing volunteer time in the individual classrooms. Please contact the teachers thru their email or speak with them directly. This type of volunteering would include: reading or math groups, P.E., drama, art, community service, music etc.

2. School Wide Volunteers

School wide volunteers are scheduled for specific on site “duties”, such as morning drop off duty, lunch duty, Pizza Thursdays etc. Many of you may have already committed to these assignments but we could always use more volunteers. A substitution list is available which allows for rescheduling or emergencies (see below).

3. Special Projects and Staff Requests

Special projects and staff requests may be long term or short term in nature but are normally “one time” special skill tasks. These assignments include school maintenance projects, recycling programs, grant writing, FOA committees, paperwork, and data entry. Every effort will be made to place volunteers in areas of interest and skill set.

All communication regarding volunteering at Oasis, with the exception of Classroom based volunteering, will be handled via a central email address volunteer@oasisacademyfallon.us”. This is the email address that you are receiving this communication from so take a second right now and put it in your contacts.

We are asking that the Oasis staff and volunteers submit their requests and/or offers for volunteering to this email address. By centralizing the communication for volunteering it will allow us to provide a quick and accurate response to managing the volunteering at Oasis. Volunteers please include in your email:

1. Your contact information

· Name

· Phone Number

· Email, if different from the one used

2. Your availability

· Monday AM, Monday PM, Tuesday AM, Tuesday PM, Wednesday AM, Wednesday PM, Thursday AM, Thursday PM, Friday AM, Friday PM, After Hours, and/or Weekends.

3. Type of work or talents you are interested in sharing with Oasis

· Some examples are school repair and maintenance, IT support, uniforms, paperwork, teacher appreciation, and yearbook.

· For School Wide Volunteer activities please note the activity and time slot you would like to be scheduled to cover.

We realize that many of you have already committed to volunteering opportunities and we have not “lost” this information. All sign-up sheets have been incorporated into the new tracking system. If you have any questions about what you may have offered to help with please email “volunteer@oasisacademyfallon.us”.

All volunteers must comply with the volunteer code of ethics and have completed the necessary paper work for a background check. A copy of both of these documents can be found at the front desk on campus.

When you arrive at Oasis to volunteer:

1. Sign in at the front desk. This allows the staff of Oasis to know who is on the school grounds at all times.

2. Obtain an FOA Volunteer nametag. There will be an accordion file for storing nametags alphabetically. If you do not have a nametag please fill out a blank one.

3. Before you leave the school please return your nametag by storing it in the accordion file.

4. Log your hours in the volunteer “Log Book” located at the front desk.

5. Sign out.

Each family is responsible for tracking and summiting their volunteer hours. All hours are to be turned into the Log Book before the end of each quarter (10/14, 12/22, 3/16, & 5/15). Please feel free to update the Log Book monthly. This information is critical to our school as it is used for obtaining funding and grants as well as leading to the overall success of our students and school.

“Strong volunteers = Strong schools”.

If you cannot make your committed time (School Wide and Special Projects): If you have signed up for volunteer time it is your responsibility to find a replacement if you cannot be there.

· Same Day Emergencies: If you have a short notice emergency that will not let you meet your committed time please notify Julie Evans via email at jevans@oasisacademyfallon.us , copy us at “volunteer@oasisacademyfallon.us) and call the school at 775-423-5437.

· General Rescheduling: If you are unable to find a substitute or replacement please contact us at volunteer@oasisacademyfallon.us 24 hours prior to your scheduled time so we can assist you.

· Classroom Volunteers: You will need to contact the specific teacher you have committed to help.

If you have family or friends that would like to be a volunteer please forward this information to them.

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support. We look forward to a strong and successful volunteer program.

Summer Scrip Contest!

As an extra incentive to give Scrip a try, we have come up with a Summer Scrip Contest!

For the next four orders (6/14, 6/28, 7/12, 7/26) for every $100 of Scrip ordered for any company, your family will be entered in to win a $100 Scrip card to your choice of one of the four companies that happen to offer a fantastic rebate to the school:
  1. LL Bean - 17%
  2. Lands' End - 16%
  3. Cabela's - 11%
  4. Old Navy - 14%
Please help support our school by doing the shopping/gifting/remodeling/dining/entertaining that you will be doing anyway!

Reminder:  The next order will go out this Tuesday 6/14/11 by 8am.  Please have your order and payment in by that time.  The order should be in by Thursday afternoon.  A member of FOA will be in touch to make delivery arrangements.

Contest ends at the completion of the 7/26/11 order.  Winner will be annouced by 7/29/11.

<---------  Please see the new poll that is up.  We'd appreciate your input!

No Fuss Fundraiser

Hopefully by now, most of you have heard about the "No Fuss Fundraiser" - this is our big fundraiser outside of Scrip for this year so we hope you will participate. For those who have seen the school, we have a lot of space to fill!

Please take a moment to see if you are able to contribute. A form is due from each family by JULY 1ST, even if you are unable to donate at this time. There are three ways to turn in your family's form:
  • Drop it off up at the school on 6/14, 6/16, 6/21 or 6/23 from 11:30 to 12:30 PM
  • Mail it to Friends of Oasis Academy, Inc. PO Box 6322, Fallon, NV 89407
The Friends of Oasis Academy, Inc. No Fuss Fundraiser
Donation Form

Many parents are tired of selling wrapping paper, cookie dough, magazines, etc. and would like to avoid pressure to stretch orders to reach a prize level. Direct contribution fundraisers allow 100% of the funds we receive to benefit our students. This method of fundraising is only successful if parents contribute generously and we hope you will!

We are asking each family to contribute to the No Fuss Fundraiser at a level with which they feel comfortable. Not making a donation will in no way affect your enrollment. This is a free public school but we would appreciate any help you can give us with our initial costs. Please make checks payable to Friends of Oasis Academy.

Because I don’t have the time or energy to rearrange my closets to store all that wrapping paper, we will donate
1 student chair ($30): ___________
Bookshelves ($35): ___________
Playground kit (balls, jump rope, etc.) ($30): ___________
Class set of whiteboards ($35) ___________
Chart paper ($50) ___________
Highlighter Tape ($50) ___________
Highlighters ($40) ___________
Post-it notes ($45) ___________

Small Bulletin Board ($52): ___________
Class set of cookie sheets ($80) ___________
Magnetic Letters ($60) ___________
Time for Kids Subscription ($90) ___________
National Geographic for Kids ($72) ___________

On behalf of our friends and co-workers who don’t want to have to go into hiding to avoid our sales pitch, we’re donating

Big Bulletin Board ($125): ___________
Classroom of Bulletin Boards ($406): ___________
White Board ($100): ___________
Novel Sets of 8 ($120): ___________
4 student chairs ($120): ___________

We do not want to risk burning our house down with another scented candle or ask our relatives to do it either. We’re donating.

Computer ($900): ___________
5 Student Tables ($550): ___________
A Classroom of Tables and Chairs ($1150): ___________
Outfit a Classroom ($3190): ___________

Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Enrollment Update - 4/27/11

From the OA Board Meeting last night:

April 27, 2011

Due to the fact that interest in the school has far exceeded initial expectations, the Oasis Academy Board of Directors is qualifying enrollment guidelines.

1. Preference will be give to siblings, but no more than ten (10) students in any one grade level will be bumped.

2. If you enroll siblings and decide to un-enroll one of your children on or before the first day of school any other child whose enrollment was the result of a bump, will also be un-enrolled; for example, if you enroll an eighth grader and a first grader and before, or on, the first day of school you un-enroll your eighth grader, your first grader will also be un-enrolled if they bumped another student.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

*The Parks and Recreation receipt for camping has no connection to the school or the enrollment process

Scrip!

We are very excited to continue The Friends of Oasis Academy’s (FOA) fundraiser – Scrip!  What is Scrip and why is it so great?
_
Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything.  Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway.  Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.  Each card purchased carries an associated “contribution” of 2-15% or more.
_
That’s right!  You can purchase Scrip for the stores you make regular purchases at and it benefits Oasis Academy!  You do not pay any extra for scrip cards, you buy them at face value and get to spend the entire amount purchased.  The merchants then graciously send back a percentage of that card to the school.  Each merchant determines their own amount given back to the school.  For example, Old Navy gives back 14%, you buy their card for $100, you spend the $100 and Oasis Academy gets a rebate of $14.  It really is that simple  While we recognize purchasing and using Scrip will take some additional planning on your part, using Scrip not only benefits the school, it also might benefit your family’s budget.
_
How do I sign up?
_
Click here:  Shop with Scrip.  Find the green box for Family Signup.
_
What is FOA’s enrollment code?
_
The code is 4F6586ED28555.
_
How do I pay for Scrip?
_
You can pay for your Scrip order by check, cash or using PrestoPay.  PrestoPay allows you to pay online via ACH debit to your checking account.  There is a $.15 charge to you per total order.  Visit the “my account” page at Shop with Scrip, and click on the PrestoPay link on the left navigation bar. You’ll find additional information and instructions for activating this convenient payment tool.
_
When is FOA placing Scrip orders?
_
FOA will be placing the orders every 2 weeks.  The dates are listed on the right side of the blog.  Please have your paper orders ready to go with payment made by 4 p.m. and Presto Pay orders are due by Midnight.  Orders and payments can be done online as well as by paper with payment dropped off at FOA's secure blue box up at the school.  Contact Coordinator Susan Richards at FOAScrip@gmail.com or call/text her at 775-427-6686.
_
When will I receive my Scrip order?
_
Orders will be in by Thursday afternoon of the same week and available for pickup at the time you pick up your children from school.  If you cannot make this pickup time, please call/text Susan Richards or email her at foascrip@gmail.com and she will be able to help you.

What is FOA?

The mission of The Friends of Oasis Academy, Inc. (FOA) is to provide promotion of, ongoing support of, and maintenance and financial support for Oasis Academy Charter School of Fallon, Nevada. In other words, we are the non-profit parent organization of Oasis Academy.

As the parent organization of Oasis Academy, fundraising will be one of our current objectives as the school year will start in August 2011.

Please click on the "Meet the Board" tab above to learn more about the current board members.

Our first fundraiser will involve a Scrip Program. A Scrip Program allows us to raise money by shopping with gift cards for everyday purchases like food, clothing, and entertainment. Each scrip gift card purchase earns a rebate for our non-profit organization. It's the powerful, "no-selling" fundraiser. While it will take some effort on our part to consciously purchase and remember to use the scrip cards, the benefits to the school are significant and we will be doing something we do anyway - grocery shopping, birthday shopping, etc.

Thank you for your support!
